Zeroing in on vaccine candidates: Vax2Muc virtual progress meeting
On 11 June 2026, the Vax2Muc consortium came together for a virtual progress meeting to discuss the latest research findings and reflect on next steps. Three years into the project, the partners are at a critical point, as growing evidence will soon lead to the selection of a lead vaccine candidate against H. pylori, which will then be evaluated by the research teams.

Since last year’s annual meeting, the partners have been busy exploring novel adjuvants and delivery systems for a future mucosal vaccine against pathogens such as H. pylori. Many of the interim findings were already presented at conferences, while others will be showcased at the upcoming 16th International Workshop on Pathogenesis and Host Response in Helicobacter Infections 2026.
These findings are leading the partners to an important upcoming milestone in the project – the selection of a lead vaccine candidate that will, over the next two years, be tested in a clinical trial as proof of concept for new vaccine strategies.
Commenting on the current state of the project, Vax2Muc coordinator Prof Markus Gerhard emphasised the importance of collaboration and good communication at this critical moment, when a strategy for the last two project years will be developed.
